Nature trail: Alter Rhein (short)

Take the train to Hohenems station, then take the 184 or 185 local bus to the ‘Cineplexx’ stop or the 321 or 322 local bus (Schweizerbus) to the ‘Zoll’ stop.

The starting point is the Hohenems customs office, where you will cross the border into Diepoldsau. After the Swiss customs office, bear right and head north along the road. Shortly after the fence, you will see a staircase leading down to the water, where the path alongside the Old Rhine begins.

This wide path runs directly alongside the water. After about 25 minutes, you will reach a small barbecue area. The path then briefly leads onto the dam before narrower paths run alongside the Rhine again – there is plenty to discover and explore here.

Follow the river to reach the Schmitter customs office, where you will cross back into Austria. Do not climb onto the dam road, but turn right immediately after the office. After walking a few metres along the meadow, you will find a small path that leads back to the water. There are many idyllic places here where you can linger, enjoy the view and take in the scenery.

The rest of the route follows the riverbank, always close to the water. You will walk upstream along the Old Rhine, past allotments, until you arrive back at the starting point at the Hohenems customs office a few minutes later.

It is particularly charming in late autumn and winter, when hoarfrost covers the landscape.

This trail is ideal for children who are new to hiking. It is also very suitable for dogs, but they must be kept on a lead. Please remember to bring dog waste bags!
